Makisi Masks

These masks are used by the Luchazi, Chokwe, Mbunda, and Luvale men during the boys' circumcision ceremony called Mukanda in Zambia. Only graduates of the Mukanda make and use the masks. The dancers put on masks with complete costumes so that they are not recognised. What those who have never been to the Mukanda do not know is that the Makisi are spirits of the initiates' dead ancestors. The Makisi masks portray various character's sometimes with considerable humour associated with the maker/dancer's tribe. Masks made and used by the Luchazi men are of cool, reserved, and respectable character. Chokwe masks are fierce in character Makisi are persistent and use obscene language. Luvale Makisi characters are full of trickery and deceit. Makisi characters play important roles in society. Some, like the Mwanapwevo (Young Lady) of the Luvale people, provide entertainment; Ndondo (Luvale) teaches the people about the bad consequences of stealing; Salizondo (Luchazi) helps people to appreciate the importance of being a hard worker.
